Did you miss the performance by Carlos Mencia, host of "Mind of Mencia," at Casino del Sol's AVA Saturday night? Fear not. A full roster of stand-ups with television shows is on the way to Tucson.
Frank Caliendo is first up with a Sept. 26 engagement at the Desert Diamond Casino, 1100 W. Pima Mine Road. If you haven't seen the portly performer on Fox's "Madtv" or on his own series, "Frank TV" on TBS, you've missed some impressive impressions of President Bush, Al Pacino, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander and a long list of others. Caliendo takes the stage at 7 p.m., and tickets are $35-$65 through Ticketmaster, 321-1000.
Next up is Dave Attell, who will perform at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress St., on Oct. 17. Attell recently took on the role as host of the revived "Gong Show" on Comedy Central. He is no Chuck Barris, but anyone who caught his recent HBO special, "Captain Miserable," would probably agree that he is pretty freaking funny, if not a tad vulgar, onstage. The performance starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $27-$39 through the Rialto box office, 740-1000.
Finally, Craig Ferguson, host of "Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson" on CBS, has popped up on the Rialto Theatre's Web site with a performance slated for Jan. 9. Ferguson's late-night humor is hit-or-miss, but he will always have a special place in my heart as Nigel Wick, Drew Carey's boss on the ABC sitcom "The Drew Carey Show." Ferguson's performance begins at 8 p.m., and tickets go on sale Friday. Prices have yet to be announced.
Ira Flatow talks science
You're out of luck if you haven't already snagged tickets to see Ira Flatow host NPR's "Talk of the Nation: Science Friday" live from the University of Arizona this week. The limited-seating event is sold out. You can, however, still catch the show on KUAZ (89.1-FM) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
Flatow, an award-winning radio and television journalist, will broadcast from the UA's Mars Mission science operations center on campus. The show will deal primarily in space exploration, with the Phoenix Mars Mission as its focus for the first hour and related topics for the second, according to Arizona Public Media reps. For more information, call KUAZ at 621-1500.
