Youngsters new to opera and older fans anxious for the Arizona Opera season to begin can get a little taste on Friday when Arizona Opera mounts "The Mini Elixir of Love," a truncated staging of Donizetti's "The Elixir of Love," at the Fox Tucson Theatre.
Admission to the 10:15 a.m. performance is free and open to the public. It is the highlight of the company's second Arizona Opera Week, an educational outreach that kicked off Tuesday and runs through Sunday. Presented in cooperation with the opera company, Tucson Unified School District and the Tucson Children's Museum, the program uses hands-on activities to teach youngsters about the all-encompassing art form of opera. The goal is to open children's minds and ears to music and acting that many have never experienced.
Some of the children in Friday's audience at the Fox, 17 W. Congress St., will participate in the production.
Opera Week concludes Sunday with Opera in a Box at the Tucson Children's Museum, 200 S. Sixth Ave., at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. The interactive program allows children to create their own opera scenes.
Arizona Opera will mount Donizetti's opera in its full length Jan. 17-18. For more information on the upcoming season, see Friday's Accent section.
