Boys Chorus passing the hat to help fund its summer tour

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.30.2008
What it is: Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus special campaign for its summer tour to Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic.
Who it's for: The chorus, to fund trip expenses.
Who's doing it: The chorus.
How to donate: Call 296-6277 or donate online at www.boyschorus.org.
The particulars: Rising gas prices have created an unexpected financial glitch in the chorus's trip next month to Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic. So the chorus, harmonic ambassadors for Tucson and the state, is passing a hat in hopes of raising the $75,000 it says it will need to cover extra travel expenses.
"Due to the changing world economy, since the trip was scheduled over a year ago . . . the chorus faces unexpected travel expenses," Michael Smith, president of the Board of Directors, said in a written release. "The board firmly believes that we must honor commitments to travel and do not want the boys to miss this extraordinary opportunity."
The chorus is asking the community for financial support with a special Pass The Hat for the Boys Chorus campaign. The group is hoping to fill the hat with enough money to cover to the expenses.
The trip takes the chorus to Tucson's sister city Almaty, Kazakhstan, for a week of concerts with the Almaty Isker Boy Choir, which visited Tucson in January. In the second week, the boys head to the Czech Republic to be a featured choir at the Second International Boys and Men's Choral Festival.
