Visual arts
The Arizona State Museum's annual Southwest Indian Art Fair this weekend brings more than 200 American Indian artists to the museum at 1013 E. University Blvd. on the University of Arizona campus.
Among those at the event will be Vino Leon Manuel, who is the featured artist this year.
The half-Tohono O'odham, half-Hopi artist, now just 27, began winning art awards when he was in high school, and it's his pencil drawing "Warrior Boy and Girl" that's been used in advertising for the fair.
In addition to art, there will be Indian foods, music and dance. It's 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 adults; $3 children 12-16; and kids under 12 are free. Two-day passes are $12.
Music
The pipers and drummers involved with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are not only members of Scotland's only regular cavalry regiment. They are also international recording artists.
The group recently signed a 1-million-pound deal with Universal Music and released "Spirit of the Glen"in November, an album featuring covers of classics like Rod Stewart's "Sailing" and the theme from "Last of the Mohicans."
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards have divided their time between music and military since the mid-1940s, with a service record reaching back more than three centuries. The group recorded "Spirit of the Glen" between tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The ensemble will be joined by the Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards at Centennial Hall tonight.
The show begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are $22-$52 through the Centennial Hall box office, 621-3341.
Dance
Ballet Tucson is thrusting some Old Pueblo up-and-comers into the spotlight with the return of its Roots of Choreography Showcase Monday night.
The event, also known as "Ballet Tucson ROCS," will include works created by company members as well as emerging choreographers from around Southern Arizona.
Among the talent are Nadia Ali with her project "Everloving," Hadley Jalbert with "The Vogues" and Cesar Rubio with "Vestige."
The evening begins at 7 p.m. at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre, 1737 E. University Blvd., on the University of Arizona campus. Tickets are $15, with discounts available, through Ballet Tucson, 903-1445.
