If one of the nation's largest beauty pageants is held in your hometown but not broadcast on cable television, does it make a sound?
Tucson is about to find out.
The finals of Mrs. America 2007, a beauty pageant that pits married women from the 50 states plus the District of Columbia against one another, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Loews Ventana Canyon resort.
But the conclusion to the two-week competition will be televised only on the Women's Entertainment Network, and neither of the two Tucson cable operators, Comcast or Cox, carries WE.
If locals want to watch the pageant they can subscribe to a satellite service or buy a ticket to the black-tie final event.
Contestants in the Mrs. America pageant have been in Tucson since Aug. 22, competing in contests, rehearsing and appearing at promotional events.
"It's starting to get pretty competitive," said Erin Claycamp, Mrs. Kansas. "We all want to win, but some women you can tell that's their only thing."
The competition recently received some unsolicited publicity after Christina Ryan, Mrs. Tennessee, was bitten on her foot near her toe by a rattlesnake. Ryan has recovered and still plans to compete.
Last year, the Mrs. America pageant was won by Tucson's own Mrs. Arizona, Diane Tucker, who went on to capture the 2007 Mrs. World title in St. Petersburg, Russia.
This year, Tracy Elliot, who works for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, will represent Arizona in the competition.
Tickets to the finals, which will be hosted by former "Growing Pains" star Alan Thicke, cost $80 for adults and $60 for children 12 and under. To buy tickets, call the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort at 299-2020 and ask to be transferred to the Mrs. America headquarters in Suite 2211.
