September is Disaster Preparation Month: A major disaster exercise will take place on Sept. 17, with a mandatory briefing on Sept. 14. Volunteers will act as victims of an urban disaster, and emergency first-responders will receive training in treating them. Register at www.azvolunteer.com. For more information, call 243-7750.
AmeriCorps works with youths: AmeriCorps members design and implement service projects, working at the Volunteer Center and other sites in Tucson. Volunteers make strong community connections and develop program management skills. Candidates must be 18 or older and be creative, flexible and committed. Community Food Bank: Help with the farmers market, pick up food with Food Bank drivers or distribute emergency food boxes. Computer literate and/or bilingual skills preferred but not necessary. Call Kristen at 622-0525, Ext. 204.
Children's mentors older than 55: Mentor pupils in kindergarten through third grade and solve a serious social problem by improving literacy. Volunteers serving 10 to 15 hours per week are eligible for a small stipend. Call 881-3300, Ext. 107.
Volunteers in Service to America: VISTA members will be placed in elementary schools to develop a sustainable volunteer program with a strong literacy component to meet the needs of children in low-income families. The volunteer will develop programs for recruitment, interviewing, training and recognition, and a system for data collection to demonstrate that tutoring has a positive academic impact. Tu Nidito: Attend an orientation at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 to learn about volunteer options to support families and children who are seriously ill or grieving.
