Student of the week: Fritz Schneden

Fritz Schneden Sabino High School, Junior
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.18.2007
Age: 17
Parents' names: Jim and Jill Schneden.
Favorite class: American history.
Activities in school: JV football, varsity baseball, JV basketball, weight-training, National Honor Society.
Activities outside of school: Tanque Verde Little League baseball and softball umpire, watching and playing sports, visiting with his grandfather.
Who would you have lunch with if you could have lunch with anyone (living or dead)? He'd love to share a meal with Martin Luther King Jr. "He really fascinated me, just what he did and the cause he did it for and his impact on our society and history."
What books are you reading now? "The Scarlet Letter."
Whom do you admire most? Fritz admires his grandmother Ruth and grandfather Bob, whom he refers to as Oma and Opa. "Oma and Opa is German for grandma and grandpa. My parents called their grandparents that and I guess it just stuck that way."
What's on your iPod? "Everything, most recently some rock music like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Temptations. I like classic rock. My most recent download was probably Sublime, though."
Plans after high school: "I would like to attend a military academy. My first choice would be West Point. I've always wanted to join the military since I was in eighth grade. I really am fascinated with the military. If I make it, I can really help my country."
Dream job: A career in the military.
Dream car: A 1968 Chevy Camaro.
Favorite place in Tucson: "A pull-off point before reaching Redington Pass . . . You can see all of Tucson."
Hidden talents: "Good impersonations." Fritz loves imitating a certain character played by Tom Hanks. "You should hear my Forrest Gump! Because life is like a box of chocolates and you never know what you're going to get in life."
Vouch: "Though a three-sport athlete, he has a respectable 3.58 GPA and is maintaining a straight-A average at this time.
"More than sports or grades, he always thinks of others first.
"Very aware of the world around him, he initiated a Wounded Warrior campaign to benefit returning servicemen and women recuperating from combat injuries. His selfless and successful effort was recognized by the American Legion Post 36," wrote Jim Kuzel, a friend of the Schneden family, in his nomination.
● Jamar Younger Student of the Week runs every Tuesday through May. In addition to being featured in the story, students receive a plaque donated by Tuller Trophy and a certificate from the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent. If you'd like to nominate a deserving student, go to http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/studentoftheweek/ and fill out the nomination form. Students also have to fill out a form. Both forms need to be completed for us to consider students. Find links to past winners at the same site.
