School board races have dearth of candidates

Voters in November won't have many options in deciding who should run local school districts.
With 49 positions open across 17 school districts, only 57 candidates filed by the Wednesday deadline to make the ballot.
Ten of the districts won't have races at all, unless write-in candidates emerge. In seven of the districts, including some of the big ones such as Sunnyside, Amphitheater, Tanque Verde, Vail and Catalina Foothills, there are exactly the number of candidates to match open seats. And many of those seats will simply be filled by incumbents.
But at least those districts have candidates. The remaining three districts — Indian Oasis-Baboquivari Unified School District, Redington Elementary School District and San Fernando Elementary School District — don't have a single candidate running for open seats.
That also happened in the race for one of the seats in Pima County's Joint Technological Education District, charged with boosting vocational and career programs for local students. No one filed to represent District 2.
The races with the healthiest choice of candidates are in the unified districts of Marana, where eight candidates are vying for three spots; and Sahuarita, where six candidates are angling for three.
Write-in candidates have until Aug. 20 to file with the Pima County school superintendent, 130 W. Congress St.
