CDO boys in second place after first round

A solid first-round performance put the Canyon del Oro boys team in second place at the Criminal Classic at Mesa del Sol in Yuma on Friday.
The Dorados shot a 155 for nine holes, seven strokes off the pace of Gilbert Highland. Sierra Vista Buena was third after a 158.
CDO junior Ryan Klump was tied for third individually after carding a 2-over 38. He and Buena's Colin McCarty were three strokes behind leader Noah Cook of Highland.
The teams will play 18 holes in today's final round.
Tucson's Phillip Trujillo shot a 3-over 39, and teammate Derek Laporte had a 40.
Buena's James Wallace, CDO's Adam Laperriere and Gentry Hicks, and Flowing Wells' Tyler Landrith also carded 40s.
Tournament of Champions
Defending Class 4A girls state champ Catalina Foothills surged to an impressive 32-stroke lead Friday after the first round of the Falcons Tournament of Champions.
Foothills senior Laura McHugh shot an 82 for 18 holes, and junior teammate Morgan McClure had an 83 at the Gallery Golf Club.
The Falcons lead the exclusive four-team tournament with a score of 430. The top five individual scores count toward a team score.
Scottsdale Chaparral was second (462), while Chandler Hamilton (487) was third and San Francisco (Calif.) Marin Catholic was fourth (514).
Sebin Kim of Hamilton led individually by five strokes after a 5-over-par 77.
The teams will finish today with a best-ball round beginning at 1 p.m.
● Complete results from the first round of the Bobcat Classic at Rancho del Lago were unavailable. Many golfers left the course without turning in their scorecards because of a rainstorm. The final round is today.
