The recent announcement of possible school closures in the Tucson Unified School District has created widespread concern in the community. Though Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer has recommended the closure of four elementary schools, the TUSD Governing Board won't vote on the issue until April.
Until then, district officials and board members are seeking community input.

ACorbett, Ochoa, Rogers and Wrightstown elementary schools have been targeted. The TUSD Governing Board voted 3-2 on Feb. 12 to begin the process.
Q: Why is TUSD closing schools?
A: TUSD officials say closing each school will net the district $600,000 to $1 million in savings. Officials say the district is facing a budget deficit of at least $15 million for the 2008-09 school year.
Q: How were the schools chosen?
A: TUSD officials say the schools were selected based on enrollment, enrollment trends, academic performance and the campus's capacity for growth.
Q: Where will students be sent?
A: Corbett students will be sent to Erickson, Kellond and Reynolds elementary schools. Ochoa students will be sent to Safford Elementary School. Rogers students will be sent to Sewell and Wheeler elementary schools. Wrightstown students will be sent to Bloom and Henry elementary schools.
Q: How does TUSD calculate school capacity?
A: For all rooms equal to or greater than 650 square feet, the operating capacity is a class size of 18 for pre-kindergartner, kindergartner and first-grade classrooms and 29 for all classes second grade and up. For classrooms 400 to 650 square feet, the class size is limited to 20.
Q: How can my student apply for open enrollment?
A: Open enrollment allows students to apply to attend any school in TUSD. Though open enrollment closed on Feb. 1, students at the four schools recommended for closure may still apply through Wednesday. Applications are available at TUSD's Welcome Center, 75 N. Park Ave..
