About 25 football players from Catalina Foothills High School gathered at the Tucson Community Food Bank recently to serve the community and build team unity.
The players spent about three hours the morning of July 12 packing and wrapping food boxes for needy people in the Tucson area.
The team's coaches wanted to show the players there is more to life than football, said Assistant Varsity Coach Ryan Maish.
"The head coach always makes it a point to not only develop student athletes but make them young men," Maish said.
The coaches received help from the players' parents, who scheduled when the team would show up, he said.
The team also volunteered at the food bank June 28.
Maish said the football team won't be volunteering for any other community service events anytime soon because of the upcoming football season.
Still, the team gained a lot from the experience, he said.
"Everyone should try to help the community once," he said. "We did a lot."
