Injuries put stress on two schools this weekArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.10.2008
Injuries are stressing 5A-II football teams in Midtown and Oro Valley this week.
Offensive guard Addison Urbalejo, a senior at Rincon/University, won't play in tonight's home game against Tucson.
Urbalejo ended last week's game in the hospital at Casa Grande. He fell after a collision and then took a face mask to the back of his head, causing some whiplash, according to coach Pat Ryden.
"We're so thin right now offensive line-wise," Ryden said. "That was one injury we couldn't afford."
The Rangers have brought up sophomore Casey Belford for tonight's game. Urbalejo will return to practice Monday.
Across town, Ironwood Ridge junior running back Adrian Brahler, went out in the first 6 minutes of Friday's game at Sierra Vista Buena. He may have stretched a ligament in his knee, but will be ready to play for tonight's home game against Salpointe Catholic, said Ironwood Ridge coach Gary Minor.
That's a lucky break for the Nighthawks. Brahler is one of the best rushers in the region, with more than 400 yards in five games.
Rattlers winning big
The Tucson Rattlers, a girls 15-under basketball team of the Amateur Athletic Union, are getting noticed by college scouts after winning three big tournaments:
● The 15-under bracket in the Nike Fall Invitational at Arizona State University last weekend.
● The 16-under division of the Swoosh Labor Day Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
● The AAU West Coast National Championship in Las Vegas in July.
In eight tournaments over the club season, the Rattlers reached the championship game seven times and won won five titles, coach Chris Klassen said.
All of the girls will play varsity basketball in the upcoming high school season. A few sophomores to watch are Cienega point guard Alyssa Deal, Sahuaro guard Rachel Holmes, Catalina Foothills small forward Shakayla McEaddy and Foothills guard Erin Peterson.
Cason rules at the net
Cienega High School's Jacquie Cason, a 6-foot-2-inch attacking machine, has stayed at the top of the Star's volleyball leader board all season.
With 160 kills in the Bobcats' first 10 matches, she has a dozen more to her name than the second-best performer — Sabino sophomore Maddie Bushman.
