Ex-UA golfer Andy Barnes returns as assistant coach

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.24.2008
Nine years after he left school, Andy Barnes returns to McKale Center on Monday as the UA's new assistant men's golf coach. In the years since Barnes left Arizona, he has played on every conceivable minitour and in scores of qualifying rounds in an attempt to earn playing privileges on the PGA Tour. He now will help Rick LaRose try to restore Arizona as a top-10 program. The brother of 2002 U.S. Amateur champion Ricky Barnes is married to former UA softball player Erika Hanson, who is the UA's assistant director of development and athletic fundraising in Phoenix. … Flowing Wells High School grad Carlos "Buddy'' Armijo was a starting first baseman last weekend in the USA U-23 fast-pitch championships in Mankato, Minn. Armijo's team, based in Santa Barbara, Calif., won the national title. He has also played for Herb Wisdom's powerhouse Si Senior fast-pitch team of Tubac. … Tucson golfer Michael Thompson earned $1,892 a week ago on the Hooters Tour in Alabama and then successfully qualified for the ongoing Nationwide Tour event in Pennsylvania. He missed the cut by one stroke despite making birdie on four of the last five holes Friday. … Tucsonan Nate Tyler has finished second, seventh, second, second and third in his last five events on golf's Gateway Tour/Texas, earning $46,000. He is now No. 5 in Player of the Year standings on that circuit, giving him considerable momentum for fall's PGA Q-School. … Former Palo Verde High School golfer Ben Kern last week topped the $100,000 mark for the first time in his brief pro career. He is at $101,563 for the year on the Gateway Tour/Arizona circuit.
IGUODALA NOT YET NO. 1
Top 13 ex-Cats, in money, surpass $750M in salaries
As difficult as it might be to comprehend, Andre Iguodala will not be the highest-paid former UA basketball player when his six-year, $80 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers is complete.
But he will move into third place behind Gilbert Arenas and Damon Stoudamire in career earnings based on money already earned and balance due in guaranteed contracts.
Here are the Sweet Six in figures obtained from basketball-reference.com and hoopshype.com:
1. Arenas. Total $163 million. He has already been paid $52 million and just signed a $111 million deal through 2014.
2. Stoudamire. Total $98 million. Already earned: $98 million. Status: free agent.
3. Iguodala. Total $89 million. Already earned: $9 million. Due: $80 million through 2014.
4. Jason Terry. Total: $85 million. Already earned: $45 million. Due: $40 million through 2012.
5. Richard Jefferson. Total: $82 million. Already earned: $40 million. Due: $42 million through 2011.
6. Mike Bibby. Total: $79 million. Already earned: $66 million. Due : $13 million through next season.
The not-so-glum second division: Michael Dickerson, $44 million, retired; Sean Elliott, $41 million, retired; Chris Mills, $37 million, retired; Brian Williams, $22 million, deceased; Sean Rooks, $17 million, retired; Steve Kerr, $16 million, retired; Jud Buechler, $11 million, retired.
That's $784 million for 13 ex-Wildcats. Good work if you can get it.
