Canyon del Oro High School remains under lockdown this morning while officials investigate a package left unattended near the southern edge of campus.
"The nature of the package was such that it was thought to be an explosive device," said Todd Jaeger, the district's associate to the superintendent and general counsel.
The package was discovered at 8:30 a.m. outside the school's Building E, on the school's south-central edge. The building contains mostly classrooms. As law enforcement officials investigated the package this morning, students and faculty were left the vicinity and went to the multi-purpose room on the west side of campus, Jaeger said.
Though the package was not a bomb, the school, at 25 W. Calle Concordia, was still in lockdown at 11:30 a.m. while officials continued their investigation, Jaeger said. Students in other buildings remained in class.
The owners of the package are students and are being interviewed by law enforcement, Jaeger said.
The identities of the students have not been released.
