Authorities are investigating an incident near Willcox in which a Border Patrol agent fired his gun while pursuing a group of illegal immigrants Thursday.
No injuries were reported, although there was a report the agent was assaulted while trying to catch the group, according to the FBI, which is handling the investigation.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on Interstate 10 near Willcox when an agent was trying to stop a vehicle, according to Carol Capas, a Cochise County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.
One or more people in the vehicle got out and began running and the agent chased them, officials said .
The agent fired at least one shot, according to Rob Daniels, a Border Patrol spokesman.
It is unclear if any of the immigrants returned fire or whether they were armed.
The FBI would not say how the agent was assaulted and would not confirm the agent fired a gun.
At least one of the illegal immigrants ran toward Willcox High School, prompting a lockdown, Capas said.
That person was caught. Information on the others was not available.
The FBI will not release any further details until after the investigation has been conducted and the findings have been presented to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The Willcox Unified School District locked down its elementary, middle and high schools, as well as the district offices during the incident, said Superintendent Richard Rundhaug.
The school district was closed for two hours before it reopened at about 11:30 a.m., Rundhaug said.
