Setting Up Windows NT 4.0

Part II: Configuring


1. You should be at the main Dial-Up Networking window, like the one below.

2. Click on the More button and select "Edit entry and modem properties". A window like the one below should appear.

3. In there should be the following settings:

Entry name
should be set left as "StarNet".

Comment

could be anything you want. It doesn't affect connecting at all.

Phone number

should be 918-4700 (the dash is optional).

Dial using

is the name of the installed modem driver being used.

4. Click on the Server tab. You should see a window like the one below.

5. In there should be the following settings:

Dial-up server type
needs to be "PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus Internet"

Network protocols

only TCP/IP should be checked

Enable software compression

should be checked

Enable PPP LCP extensions

should be checked

6. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button. You should see a window like the one below.

7. There things should be set for the following:

Server assigned IP address
It must be set to "Server assigned". Otherwise it will not work.

Specify name server addresses

It must be set to "Specify name server addresses" with the following settings:
Primary DNS = 169.197.1.3
Secondary DNS = 169.197.1.4
Primary WINS = all zeros
Secondary WINS = all zeros

Use IP header compression

should be checked

Use default gateway on remote network

should be checked

8. Click on Ok

9. Click on the Script tab. You should see a window like the one below.

10. "None" should be selected.

Note: If you are having problems logging in, you can set it for "Pop up a terminal window". That setting will bring up a window as soon as the modems make a connection. In that window you will be prompted to enter your username and password. Once that's been done, you can click on Close.

11. Click on the Security tab. You should see a window like the one below.

12. Here you must have "Accept any authentication including clear text". If anything else is selected, you will not be able to log in.

Note: There is also an Unsave Password button. If you tell Dial-Up Networking to save your password, then you will need to click this button if you need to look at the Dial window again.

13. Click on Ok and then you should be back at the main Dial-Up Netowrking screen..

14. Here you can click on Dial to connect to StarNet.

Note: Also, you can click on More and select "Create shortcut". That will create a Dial-Up Networking shortcut titled "StarNet.lnk" on your desktop.

15. If you click on Dial or the shortcut on the desktop, it will pop up a window like the one below.

Connect to

16. In there are the following settings:

Username
must be a "P" followed by your username in all lower case.

Note: Your username is the three to seven character name you selected when you started the account. For example, the user "support" would enter Psupport (without the quote marks) for the username.

Password

is the eight character string of letters and numbers given to you when you set up the account. The letters are in upper and lower case. They must be entered in the same case as they were given to you or it will not work.

Domain

must be left blank

Save Password

is entirely up to you. If it is checked, NT will save your password so you don't have to enter it each time.

Note: If you tell NT to save your password, it will not bring up the Dial screen again, even if the password is incorrect. If you need to bring up the Dial screen again, you must click the Unsave Password button on the Security tab in the preferences.

17. Once all the information has been entered, click on Ok and then NT should log you in. Once logged in you can run whatever Internet applications you want.
