Setting Up Windows NT 4.0

Part I: Installation


Note: These instructions are for a stand-alone WinNT machine. If the computer is on a network, the setup should only be done by the network administrator. Otherwise, you could end up taking the machine off your network.

Note: You may need the Windows NT install CD during the installation. You may also need to be logged in under an account which has administrator rights.


1. Double click on My Computer.

2. Double click on Control Panels.

3. Double click on the Network icon. If a window pops up asking if you want to set up networking on the computer, go to the Setting Up Windows NT 4.0's Networking page

4. Click on the Identification tab. You should see a window like the one below.

5. If you haven't done so already, enter something in for computer name and workgroup name. It doesn't matter what you put in (assuming the computer isn't on a network), but something must be entered.

6. Click on the Services tab. You should see a windw like the one below.

7. Make sure the following are available. If they aren't, you'll need to add them.

NetBIOS Interface
Remote Access Service
Server
Workstation

8. Click on the Protocols tab. You should see a window like the one below.

9. Make sure "TCP/IP Protocol" is in the list. If it isn't, click on Add and select it from the list. If it asks if you use a DHCP server, tell it No.

10. The Adapters and Bindings tabs should be left as is.

11. Click on Ok to close the Network window.

Note: If you made any changes, it will prompt you to restart; in which case you will need to restart before continuing.

12. Open up My Computer on the desktop and double click on Dial-Up Networking.

Note: If Dial-Up Networking hasn't been installed, it will bring up a window asking you if you want to install. If you have the Windows NT CD-ROM, then click on Install.

Note: If you have Service Pack 5 or higher installed, you may need to re-install the Service Pack after installing Dial-Up Networking.

13. If there are no existing phonebook entries, NT will walk you through setting one up. If there is an existing entry, you'll have to click on the New button. A window like the one below should appear.

14. In there, the replace phonebook entry name with "StarNet".

15. Click on Next. The next window should look like the one below.

16. In there make sure "I am calling the Internet" and "Send my plain text password" are checked.

17. Click on Next. The next window should look like the one below.

18. In there enter 918-4700 (the dash is optional).

19. Then click on Next.

20. Click on Finish.

21. You've now created the connection. However, it need to be configured before you will be able to use it. For instructions on how to do that, go to Part II of the instructions.
