Note: These instructions are for a stand-alone Win95/Win98 machine. If the computer is on a network, the setup should only be done by the network administrator. Otherwise, you could end up taking the machine off your network.
Note: Unless you have the Windows install files on your hard drive, make sure you have the Microsoft Windows 95/98 install CD/disks available; you will probably need it at least once.
1. Double click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.
2. Double click on Control Panels.
3. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
4. Click on the Windows Setup tab. You should see a window like the one below.
5. Click on "Communications" once to highlight it. Then click on the Details button. A new window like the one below pops up.
6. If the box in front of Dial-Up Networking isn't checked, click in the box to put a check in it.
7. Click on OK.
8. Click on OK again.
Note: If Dial-Up Networking wasn't checked, then it may prompt you for the Windows CD/disks. You will need to provide them if everything is going to be installed properly. If you do not have them, click on Cancel and try again when you do.
Note: If you get a message like "You must provide Workgroup and Computer names", then in the window that comes up, put in your first name for Computer Name and your last name for the Workgroup Name.
9. If it asks for you to reboot, click on No.
10. Double click on the Network control panel. You should see a window like the one below.
If you have Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP but not Client for Microsoft Networks, you will be able to log in, but Windows will not be able to save your password. If you want to install Client for Microsoft Networks, you need to go to the Installing Client for Microsoft Networks page.
If you do not see "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter", then you will need to go to the Installing TCP/IP page.
