DSL Equipment being moved to Neighborhood Terminal cabinets
Currently, DSL Equipment, also known as DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs), is located in Central Office wire centers.
By moving these DSLAMs into Remote Terminal cabinets (ie, a box located in your neighborhood), it will enable lines to qualify for DSL if they had failed to before.
According to Qwest, it is expected that 95% of the customers who are served by the Remote Terminals will qualify for DSL.
A few things to keep in mind:
-Remote DSLAMs won't replace Central Offices, but provide additional DSL capabilities.
-Remote DSLAMs will be provisioned by DMT DSL Technology. Thus, DSL Select service, ($19.95 Qwest and $14.95 Starnet) will not be available. Only the DSL Deluxe service will be.
-Customers served from Remote DSLAMs cannot qualify for 4M or 7M DSL speeds. Currently the ATM infrastructure will not support Remote DSLAMs at the 4M and 7M DSL speeds.
How long does it take?
Normally when ordering DSL service, the estimated wait time is 10-business days. Unfortunatly, with the remote DSLAMs, the due dates are longer, needed to successfully deploy the first wave of remote DSLAMs. The estimated due dates will be approximately 5-8 weeks. Once the first wave is complete, installation times won't be so long. The modem will still reach the customers prior to the actual due date.
How do you order?
In the first phase those who qualify for DSL service from a Remote DSLAM will be given a message to contact a Qwest Representative to assure the order. After this phase, ordering should be back to the 10-business day service. Then DSL service through Remote DSLAMs will be available for ordering through any Qwest ordering options, including online. The sales representative will give the customer their due date based on the application date. A sample of due dates is shown down below in the

Great! When does it start!
It's already started! Keep in mind, the process is not an overnight one. It's not a tomorrow thing either. Note that it may take some time to get it to you, but work has already begun. Patience plays a big game here. The changes will start taking place first in the Catalina Foothills area, with other areas soon to follow.
