Basic Admin Tools

The Basic Administration Tools will allow you to do the following:

Show Distribution (showdist)
This command will send the list owner an email message with the distribution list, i.e. all the people subscribed to the list.

Show Command Log (showlog)

This command will send the list owner the log of commands and errors pertaining to the list. That is, it sends a list of any changes made by the owner/moderator and any errors that occured (like a non-list member trying to send mail to a closed list).

Wipe Command Log (wipelog)

This command will delete the current command log (described above) and start over.

Subscribe/Unsubscribe (subscribe/unsubscribe)

These commands can be used to add or remove email address to/from the list.

Check Distribution List (checkdist)

This command will search the distribution list for a specified address. It will return (via email to the list owner) the eight closest matches to the supplied address.

In order to issue these commands to SmartList, you need to do the following:

1. Go to the Basic Administration Tools web page, http://listserv.azstarnet.com/admin/admin.html.

2. For "List-Owner E-Mail Address" enter in your username (assuming you are the list owner).

3. For "ListServ Password" enter in the list password.

4. For "List Address" enter in the name of the list (the mailing address for the list).

5. For "Command" click on the dropbox (where it says "showdist") and select the command you want to execute.

6. If you are using the subscribe, unsubscribe or checkdist commands, you need to enter the email address in the box following/underneath the dropbox where you selected the command.

7. Click on Submit.

8. Once submitted, you will be taken to a page with just the Command portion of the form where you can enter more commands. (The other settings will be read from what you've entered on the first page.)

9. Once SmartList has processed the commands, confirmation or an error notice will be sent to the list owner's (your) email address.

Error Mail Messages

If SmartList encounters an error while trying to execute the commands, it sends the owner a mail message with the result.

However, the description given is in the mail's headers. If you have your mail program set to show limited (To:, From:, and Subject: only) or none at all, you will not see the description--it will look like a blank message from the list's request address.

Enabling the full listing of headers varies from program to program. The Mail Headers page explains how to enable full headers for some mail programs.

The two primary headers that give an indication of what went wrong are the "X-Diagnostic:" and "X-Command:" lines.

Typically the X-Diagnostic field will report "Suspicious X-Command format". This indicates an error either in the list owner's address or in the password.

The X-Command field tells you will what was submitted (in this order) for the list owner, the list password, and the command SmartList was supposed to execute. Make sure the list owner and password were entered properly. If they weren't, you will need to resubmit the command with the proper information.
