StarNet Game CD Installation Notes
CD Games Installation Notes for Win 3.1
Users
Windows 3.1 games are in the directory called "Win3.1". This directory
has subdirectories of main category game names. Each one of these
directories has a text file with a brief description of each file that
was included. The text file can be opened by just double clicking it while
in File Manager. Files on this CD ROM are in two formats, .exe, and .zip.
EXE Files
EXE files are executable: all you need to do is to create a working
directory in your hard drive, copy the file desired from the CD to such
directory, double click on the file name, and it will self extract in
such working directory. You will notice Windows drops to DOS,
decompresses and explodes the files and returns to File Manager window.
Press F5 on your keyboard to update the directory contents and find the
setup.exe file. Double click the setup.exe file and follow the instructions.
ZIP Files
A .zip file is a compressed file: all you need to do is to create a
working directory in your hard drive, copy the file desired from the CD
to such directory. See Instructions on Unzipping Files. Press F5 on your
keyboard to update the directory contents and find the setup.exe file.
Double click the setup.exe file and follow the instructions.
Unzipping Files
You will need to use a utility to decompress the .zip file such as WinZip.
The Windows 3.1 version of Win Zip is located in the root directory on
this CD ROM and its name is: wz16v61.exe
To Install WinZip
All you need to do is double-click on the wz16v61 on the root directory.
After clicking, a dialog box will appear; click the "Setup" button. The
setup will lead you through installing WinZip on your hard drive. Once
you have WinZip installed, use it to decompress .zip files.
Creating a Working Directory
Using File Manager, highlight "C:\", select "File", the select "Create
Directory". Name it anything you like. Example "gametemp". Click "OK".
The new directory should list now under the directory names. This is where
you will store the game file that you transfer from the CD for install.
Copying a File From CD to Hard Drive
While in File Manager, double click your working directory. Click on the
CD drive name button on top of screen, find the file name you need to
copy, select the file and drag it to the C button.
Notes: Files in the working directory can be deleted
after setting up the game on your hard drive and you may continue using
this working directory for other games to be installed. Make sure you read
the readme file in the root directory.
CD Games Installation Notes for Windows 95
Users
(If you don't have a copy of winzip on your computer, you will need to
install it first before trying to run any .zip game file. It will not
extract all the self-contained files unless you have it installed - The
Winzip program is titled "Winzip95.exe". It is in the root directory.
To Install a Game:
1. Create a temp directory on your hard drive for the game you are going
to transfer off the cd rom and install on your computer i.e. "diablo".
2. Load the cd in your drive and then use Windows Explorer (like File
Manager for Windows 3.x). Find the .zip/.exe file of the game you want.
Right click on the filename and select "copy". Then go to your c:\ drive
and look for the games temp directory you created. Now, right click on
your temp directory and a menu will pop up. Click on paste. This will now
copy the file off the cd rom and load it in your hard drive under your
created temp games folder. All you have to do now is double click on the
game file you transferred and it will begin the install.
Note: Each game manufacturer has a variation of how the
installs take place.
For some, your sound will be automatically configured - for others, you
will have to run the setup programs included and specify what hardware
you're using. This is no different from when you purchase a computer game
from the store. For whatever version you are using (Win95, Win 3.x), make
sure you check the readme files in each directory - it will give you a
list of all the games and a brief description. Make sure you read the
readme file in the root directory.
HAPPY GAMING!!!!
