Spam filters need to walk a line between keeping the spam mail out of your Inbox while leaving your wanted mail untouched. It is not a perfect solution, but it can be effective a high percentage of the time.
StarNet has developed a set of filters for Netscape Messenger which has shown to be effective at re-directing spam while leaving regular mail alone. It won't make your Inbox spam-free, but it should catch a good number and (typically) not re-direct your regular mail.
The way the filters work requires a little effort on your part before you download. That's what these instructions are for.
The first step is to create the folders where the filters will place the messages. Since there is a chance regular mail might get re-directed, the filters don't place the mail directly into the Trash folder.
1. Bring up Netscape Messenger.
2. On the Left-hand side, click on Local Mail once to highlight it. (For Windows 3.1, just skip down to the next step.)
3. Go to File and select New Folder... You should see a window like the one below.
4. In the "Name" box type in Spam (make sure "Local Mail" is selected in the second box) and click on OK (or Create on the Mac).
5. Repeat steps 2 & 3 and name the folder Suspect (again, make sure "Local Mail" is selected) and click on OK (or Create on the Mac).
1. In Messenger, go up to Edit and select Message Filters... You should see a window like the one below.
2. Click on New. You should see a window like the one below. (On Macs, it will appear at the bottom of the current window.)
3. Click on Advanced. You should see a window like the one below. (On Macs, click on "subject", scroll down, and click on "Customize".)
4. Under "New message header" type in received and click on Add.
5. Then in the same field type in comments and click on Add.
6. Then in the same field type in x-mailer and click on Add.
7. Click on OK.
8. Click on OK again.
