DSL FAQ

StarNet and Select

Previous Contents Next

There are additional differences between Select and Deluxe that you should be aware of...

1. Only one computer can use the connection.

If you get Select, you must get the Intel 2100 internal card. Since you can't setup a network using the Intel card, only the computer with the Intel card can use the DSL connection.

2. No free month with dial-up

Select customers do not get the first month of service free, unlike Deluxe or higher DSL speed customers.

Also, Select customers do not get dial-up ability for free in that first month, unlike Deluxe or higher DSL speed customers.

3. Only three extras and no dial-up

Select customers are limited to a total of three "extra", i.e. additional mail-only usernames after the firt two and/or additional server space for web pages. Each extra is typically $2.50/month added to the monthly StarNet bill. (Deluxe and higher DSL speeds can have up to five extras.)

However, Select customers will get billed for three "extras" even if they only get one or two. For example, even if you just get one additional mail-only address, you will be billed $20.95 (or $22.95 if you pay by monthly invoice). (Deluxe and higher DSL speeds pay only for the extras actually used.)

Also, Select customers cannot get dial-up ability added to the primary DSL account, unlike Deluxe or higher DSL speed customers.

4. Not available for non-Windows operating systems.

Select requires use of the Intel 2100 DSL card. Since the card only works in Windows, you can only get the Select service if you are using Windows 95/98/ME or Windows NT4/2000.
