The cost of StarNet server/commercial DSL

Previous Contents Next

First, let's clarify one possible misunderstanding. Just because you may be a business does not mean you have to pay the server/commercial DSL price.

If all you want to do is basic Internet access, client-only DSL should be fine for you -- and thus all you need is to pay the client-side pricing.

However, if you want to have static IPs, set up your own server (web, FTP, or whatever), or basically want people to access your computer through the Internet, then you need a server/commercial DSL account.

As covered under "Running servers under StarNet DSL", the price of client-only DSL is low because it is assumed that the DSL link won't be running at full capacity all the time.

However, when you're running server applications and people outside StarNet are accessing your machine constantly, that can generate as much traffic as 10 - 30 regular DSL users. A dozen of these types of connections could start negatively effecting all other StarNet user's ability to access the Internet.

As a result, we need to make sure that server-enabled DSL users "carry their weight" for bandwidth usage -- that those using that service are not subsidized by the other subscribers. To ensure that, we have the following server-enabled DSL pricing:

Transfer Rate (kbps)StarNet Monthly Fee Qwest Monthly Fee Total Monthly Charge (SN & Qwest)
640 down
272 up
$300 $29.95 $329.95
640 down
512 up
$500 $62.40 $562.40
768 bi-directional$700 $76.80 $776.80

In addition to being able to run Internet server applications, server pricing includes up to five static IP addresses.
