Common Mail Problems/Settings
Okay, mail isn't working. It's complaining about not being able to find
the server; you haven't gotten mail in weeks; or it's giving you strange,
cryptic error messages. Well, this is the page for you. We'll cover some
of the basic setups and problems you could experience using some of the
more popular email programs.
Settings
There are literally dozens of email programs, so we can't cover them all.
However, we can cover the more common ones. The following are the specific
setups for those various email clients:
Windows
Macintosh
Common Problems
I haven't gotten my mail ever or for awhile
This problem is typically caused by problems with the settings in the mail
program. Check your settings for your mail program using the links up
above.
The most common problems are having the "P" in front of the username
or "@azstarnet.com" in for POP User Name in Netscape Mail.
Netscape: "Unable to locate the server..."
Eudora: "Error getting network address..."
Eudora: "Error connection timed out"
If you've never been able to check for or send mail with this particular
mail program, the first thing to check are the settings. Most important
are Eudora's setting for POP Account or Netscape's Incoming (POP) Server,
depending on which program you use.
Another thing to keep in mind, if you don't use the modem (don't go to
a web page or check for mail) for 10-20 minutes, you will be disconnected
(though your modem may continue to try and send data). So, if you spend a
long period of time writing a message, you may get disconnected (writing
email doesn't use the modem). If that is the case, you will need to reset
the modem and log back in. If the modem is external, all you need to do is
turn it off and then turn it back on. If the modem is internal, you will
need to shut down the computer (completely turn it off) and then restart
it.
Eudora error: "...ERR POP authentication DB not available..."
This error is caused by an incorrect setting. Check the Eudora settings
using the link above. The problem is that Authentication (under
Checking Mail) is set for APOP instead of Passwords.
Eudora error: "Circular reference..." When trying to send mail
This error is caused by having a nickname that is the same as the email
address. To solve the problem, go to Window--Nicknames (or
Tools--Nicknames if you're using Eudora Light). In the
Nicknames window, highlight the nickname entry and hit the Remove
button. Close the Nicknames window and try sending the mail again.
Eudora error: "Error opening script file ... serial.mod"
This error is caused by having Dialup selected for the Connection Method
under Getting Started. It should be set for Winsock on
Windows/Win95. On Macs it should be either MacTCP or TCP/IP.
