Start Procedures

1. First, make sure the customer has the minimum requirements to use StarNet. They must have at least the following:

Macintosh

Netscape 2.02: Netscape 3.0 Instead, recommend Microsoft's Internet explorer


Widows 3.1


Windows 95

If the customer has less than the above, and still want to sign up, let them know that we can not support them

2. Go over the different prices. Inform the customer that the connection fee pays (in part) for the licensed copy of software and is non-refundable.

3. If the customer is paying by billing, let them know about the 28-day grace period and they need to contact us if they wish to cancel.

4. If the customer is an employee, have them fill out a payroll deduction slip prior to signing up. Also, they must pay the connection fee of $20 in advance by check or cash before the software may be picked up. If an employee does not wish to pay by payroll deduction or automatic renewal, let them know they may be billed but it will be at full price.

5. Pull up the customer's address in the AS400:

By phone number

  1. On the main AS400 info screen, enter "A" for the Option Code.
  2. Tab over to the Phone Number field and enter the phone number.
  3. Hit Enter on the keyboard.
  4. If an address window comes up, make sure that the address matches the customer. If it does, go to step 6. If not, hit F1 and try one of the other searches.
  5. If a window with multiple addresses come up, see if any of those match the customer's. If so, put an X in front of the correct address and hit Enter. If not, hit F2 and try another search.
By Address
  1. On the main AS400 info screen, enter "G" for the Option Code.
  2. Go down to the Home Unit # field and enter the street number.
  3. Go over to the Pre field and enter in N, S, E, or W depending on which it's supposed to be.
  4. Under Street Name, enter in... the street name.
  5. If there's an apartment number, in the first field under the Sub-Unit field enter A for apartment, S for Suite, or U for unit. In the second field enter the number of apartment/suite/etc.
  6. Under Zip, enter in the zip code.
  7. Hit Enter on the keyboard.
  8. If the address comes up, check to see if the customer's name is on the list of people. If it isn't, find an empty entry, put an X in the X field and fill out the rest of the information.
  9. If a list of addresses comes up see if you can find the exact address in the list. If not found, it will need to be added.
  10. Once done, continue with the setup as usual.
5a. If the address isn't in the system, it will need to be added:
  1. On the main AS400 screen, use Option Code "X".
  2. Under the first field under Name, enter "Resident".
  3. Under Home Unit#, put the street number.
  4. Under Pre, put in N,S,E, or W (whichever it is).
  5. Under Street Name, enter in... the street name.
  6. For the first field under Sub-Unit, enter in A for apartment, S for Suite, or U for unit.
  7. For the second field under Sub-Unit enter the apartment/suite number.
  8. Under Zip, enter in the zip code.
  9. Hit Enter.
  10. If it takes you to a second screen that isn't the address, try hitting F10.
(For setting up Post Office boxes, leave the address field blank and enter "B" and the box number under Sub-Unit. The Zip field must also be entered. It will complain about deliver after hitting Enter. Hit F10 to override the error.)

6. If they don't have a StarNet account under the address, create one using "SN" for Pub and "9999999" for Route. Be sure to get the customers phone number. Go into the account and start the account using the following codes:

*** - Use the appropriate promotion code. For start type be sure to ask customer what kind of software they need and use the appropriate code. Be sure to ask the customer how they heard about us to assist the marketing department.

Press F10 to update and the customer is now started in the AS400. Note their StarNet account number.

6. If the customer wishes to pay by credit card input the information into the AS400 by pressing F11.

* - The first "Type" above is: For the second "Type" field, "O" stands for one-time charge and "P" stands for perpetual (automatic-renewal).

Press F10 after inputting all info. When using the credit card screen be aware that if you press F11 you delete all info.

7. Go to Netscape (or whatever web browser is installed). Under bookmarks, select Make User. Or, go to http://www.azstarnet.com/cs-bin/make_user

Input your username and password when promted.

8. Let the customer know they will need to select a username of three to seven lowercase letters, and they will be assigned a password. They can change the username once for free, and then there is a $5 fee. Also, they can get a new password once per month and after that there is a $5 charge per new password

9. Enter the info on the make_user form. Ask the customer what username they would like (again--between 3 and 7 characters, all lowercase). Put in the account number from the AS400, chose the correct account type, then submit the form.

10. If no one is using the username, Netscape will return with an 8 character password. Make sure that you let the customer know that the passwords are case sensitive (that upper and lower case for each letter is important) and that we don't have a copy once we give it to them. Read the password to the customer and have them read it back to you.

11. If the customer is signing up more than one person in their household, you need to submit "make_user" for each additional users. This will give each individual a mailbox, not a simultaneous login. If they want to be logged in at the same time, they need separate accounts.

12. If a business is signing up for more than one person, a new AS400 account must be set up for each person, and you must submit a "make_user" for each account. Additional users at $2.50 are available for "email only" for businesses

13. Before you let the customer go, let them know about our SNUG schedule and radio program. If they are newbies to the Internet you may also want to let them know about the discount for StarNet subscribers for the Extended University's Internet classes. For more information on that they can call 621-UofA.

14. Make sure that in the AS400 you use IUN message to record the the customer's username.

15. Thank the customer for calling us and tell them that they will also recieve a manual with the software in approximately 4 working days. Let them know they can call us if they have any questions.
