A Standard to Live Up To

By Patricia Sanders

We were so raw we could be seduced by civility
Entering into the labyrinth through a door
The man ambles, rolling shoulders, tie swinging
A picture of masculinity, a Yale man
The brand-new car, the beautiful blond wife
The degree in law, business, and class
Wing-tipped shoes
Wing-tipped shoes
Expensive chinos, leopard print bikini briefs
Lawyer's briefs

We were so intensely fixated on this man
A teacher of profession, he stops
To confer with himself
Fancy briefcase, wing-tipped shoes,
Princeton haircut
Rich white men can't jump
Past the boundaries which have been set

But we were raw and untouched
Motiveless emotion redirected
Yale men
Seduced by Yale men
