Falling Asleep

By Erin Carter

I am a lazy sailboat,
resting in the harbor.
weak and the weary
A soft, little ship
sinking
slowly to the bottom
of the sea.

I am a hissing ember,
smoldering into smoke.
A warmth, a light
surrendering
myself to dust.

I am a lonely tree in winter,
abandoned of color.
A naked twig
bending
by the push of
a ceaseless wind.

I am a stony cavern,
smooth as the water that carved me.
An echo of myself
dripping
in a nearby puddle.

I am nobody,
falling asleep to the sound of breath.
A stranded body
drifting, melting
into the shadow of
sleep.
