A flower to the HopeFest. It's always encouraging to see good work recognized, and we're proud that Tucson's HopeFest was recognized by USA Weekend magazine as a top charitable event in the country for its Make A Difference Day.

The HopeFest will receive a $10,000 check from Newman's Own Foundation as part of the honor.

For 16 years, HopeFest has created a one-stop place for people to learn about and access community services they might need from nonprofit groups, religious organizations and volunteers — and they can get help with everything from groceries, clothes and haircuts to counseling services and free dental cleanings.

HopeFest, held in October, is open to everyone.

Last year, more than 7,000 people attended HopeFest at Tucson Electric Park.

We're excited that such a wonderful part of Tucson is being singled out for national attention. An event this useful is a massive undertaking and Tucson is all the better for the hard work of so many involved in HopeFest.

A flower to the University of Arizona for addressing important community issues by hosting Dr. Alejandro Toledo, former president of Peru, at a Social Justice Symposium, "Social Justice in Health: Local to Global" this week.

Toledo will discuss the links between poverty, health care and democracy in two speeches Thursday at the UA.

Former First Lady Elaine Karp-Toledo will give the keynote address, "Reversing the Trend: Resilience in the Face of Historical Trauma" at a separate conference Saturday.

Flowers to the U.S. Postal Service workers who pulled a late night to help procrastinating tax filers meet the midnight deadline for an April 15 postmark.

In an ideal world everyone would get their taxes done early and avoid the late-night rush, but that's probably never going to happen — so we appreciate the postal workers who go the extra mile.
