Young voices: Do students have too much homework?

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.24.2008
Question: Do students have too much homework? Do you think homework is useful?
I don't believe as high school students who want to pursue college dreams gain enough homework on a daily basis. I know that I have come home before and my parents asked me if I had any home work, and my reply was no. This startled my step-mom because she expected me to name off the list of teachers who gave a large amount of homework. Homework can be very beneficial to most people because you gain more knowledge and practice on the subject. It is giving the student more points in class toward their grade.
Brittany Saucedo, 17
Palo Verde High Magnet School
As much as I would like to say "we have way too much homework," homework is very useful and most schools prescribe the right amount. If you went to the doctor and your doctor gives you one medicine tablet while you are there, but you never take more on your own, what good is that one tablet? If you are prescribed medicine, you take it for a while at home to make sure that it works well. Homework is the same way. Although we are at school for seven hours every day learning and most people conclude that those few remaining hours should be up to our discretion, homework helps to instill the newly gained knowledge and helps us to understand much more of the material. I do have to add that I also do not necessarily love homework, but I have come to realize that it does provide a way to help me remember the day's work.
Shelby King, 17
Salpointe Catholic High School
Homework depends on the type of class a student is in. The amount given usually tends to suit the type of class. For example, if a student is in a regular class, they may rarely have homework if they have any at all. However, a student in Advanced Placement and Honors classes might have too much sometimes and feel overwhelmed. Overall, homework is useful. It helps students learn and get a better understanding of what is being taught. It also helps students prepare for tests. Homework is beneficial to everyone and should be given out regularly.
Daniella Castillo, 17
Sunnyside High School
Students are given the right amount of homework in my opinion. Teachers know or realize that students have other things or duties to do, such as: playing a sport for the school or play for something else, being in a club, doing chores at home, etc. Homework is helpful for students, so they learn the material on their own and do the assignment on their own. Being able to do their homework or complete it on their own can give a student confidence toward doing schoolwork and could bring good grades. Homework can keep students out of gangs and trouble because if they have homework to do, they don't have time to cause trouble. If students have homework to do, they will be less likely to have sex and would avoid pregnancy. It also teaches students responsibility in having to complete assignments on time. Students could be or will be home more to spend time with their family if they have homework.
Narciso Villarreal, 17

I think students have just enough homework. I think that it is very useful because the teachers know if we have learned anything and it helps me with my problems.
Preston Davey, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
Research has proven that homework is a teaching strategy; that's it. Homework does not help me become a better learner. If I already know how to do the math problem, does assigning 50 of the same thing make me smarter? I don't think so! Besides, some teachers take weeks to grade the homework. It's a waste of time for teachers and students.
Lauren Sankey, 14
Sabino High School
I think it depends on the day, because some days you might have too much homework and other days you could have no homework at all. I do think it's useful because instead of watching TV, I can practice doing my lessons and review information that was already covered in class.
Tatiana Macias, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think that students have just enough homework. Yes, it is useful because then I can remember the lesson.
Beryl Higgins, 11
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think we get too much homework because most people play sports or have after school activities.
Colton Lloyd, 11
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think we get enough homework in most classes but sometimes we will get a set of tests in one subject, which makes it too much, I think.
Austin Catling, 11
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think that I have too much homework. I do think homework is useful because it helps you practice what you learn at school, but too much homework makes it boring and your mind tends to drift away from your work. I think that if we had less homework it would be better because every day we need rest to help us focus our minds on our work. If we stay up late each night doing homework, we won't be happy the next day, and we won't get all of the educational values we would have if we were well rested.
Ashley Feig, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think students have too much homework because they already have six hours of school which gets you all tired then the last thing you want to think about is homework. I think homework is useful because students learn more and the teachers can make sure you understand what you were taught.
Dillon Kelly, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think that students have too much homework. If a student has something else, what if they don't have time? If they have to practice an instrument or have to go to the store, they may not have time to do four pages of hard homework. I think it is useful because if the kid doesn't get the concept, he can practice it at his house with his parents.
Clarke Wallace, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think that students have just enough homework because we need it to understand the work. We might not like it. I don't, but it will help me now and in the future. Homework is useful because it helps me understand the work and I think it's good to know it because you never know when you'll need to know something that you learned.
Elizabeth Barkley, 11
Tanque Verde Elementary School
Yes, students have too much homework. Homework is not necessary. It is not useful. Kids go to school and do work all day and then they go home and have more work. Frankly, I don't think that it is fair. Bottom line: homework should be banned!
Shelby Williams, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think it depends what teacher you have. At my school, for some odd reason, I like to do the homework. Homework is very useful because it teaches kids responsibility. Homework is like having school come to your home. It is definitely useful!
Stephanie Swain, 11
Tanque Verde Elementary School
Students do not have too much homework. They have just enough. Yes, I think the homework is useful. I think that it is useful because it helps me prepare for the AIMS test.
Marc Bulau, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think students have a fair amount of homework. We don't have too much or too little. Homework is useful because if we just did all of our work in school, we would not get the independence we have at home.
Krista Laurie, 11
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think students at our school have WAY too much homework. I don't really think homework is useful because we already do a ton of classwork at school so I don't see why we need to do more at home.
Amanda Grimshaw, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I do think some students have too much homework. Each day is different. Homework should be given in consistent amounts. I do think homework is useful but having teachers add more homework or having them give too much as a punishment causes stress.
Jeffrey Maseeh, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think students have just enough homework. I think it is useful because it informs students if we understand the material we are doing for classwork. Homework also helps us improve on the material because it gives us more practice.
Faith Giron, 11
Tanque Verde Elementary School
Students usually have just enough homework for their grade level. They are almost always challenged to their abilities. Sometimes, teachers overdo homework by giving it on the weekend. Homework is very useful because it reviews the lesson talked about earlier in the day.
Michael Rooyakkers, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
No, I don't think it's useful if you already understand it. But, if you don't understand it, you need the homework.
Harvey Nelson, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think that kids get a lot of homework. Homework is useful because it gives you a little test about what you just learned.
Joel Ingalls, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think students don't have too much homework. They have just the right amount. I think homework is useful because it reinforces what you have been learning and makes it stick in your head.
Conor Jacobs, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think it is just the right amount of homework. I also think it is useful because it helps you understand the lesson.
Allison Bisbee, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think students have just enough homework. It's not like the students have piles and piles of homework. They only have a little bit or they have to write things out. It is useful because then the students won't forget what they have learned. The homework will show if they really understand the concept or not. If they don't understand it, the teacher will ask questions and review it. They will get better results if they understand it. The fact that I get homework in math because it is helpful. I ask my teacher questions if I don't understanding the work. This also raised my grade up a lot! I am proud about my grades and am becoming a better learner.
Marivel Sanchez, 12
Tanque Verde Elementary School
I think that the only classes that should give homework are the classes that you really need to practice concepts, such as math. For kids that play sports, it is extremely hard to travel somewhere for a game, get home late and tired, and then have homework to finish. Whether there is too much homework depends on the student, whether they play sports or have other activities.
Jamie Rodriguez, 16
Mountain View High School
I do think that students have too much homework sometimes. We have school all week and have to deal with all the drama that high school brings. We also have to deal with teachers. School is where you should do your school work. I think if we had one homework assignment for every class once a week, fewer students would drop out. I do think homework is fair and there won't ever be a time when teachers don't give homework. It helps us to practice what we learn, but it is hard to learn through homework because there is no teacher at home to help us.
Nicole Castillo, 15
Mountain View High School
I don't think students get that much homework, but it is hard because what we do get is for more than one class. Homework is time-consuming because you have to remember what went on in each of the classes. It's hard juggling math homework and an English essay at the same time. They need to get with other teachers so we can have more time to do something. Homework always seems to be due on the same day. I guess it is useful because, when we are working, our boss might have us doing more than one task at a time. It can help with that a lot. But, still, it's not exactly a fun time doing homework.
Molly Moeur, 16
Mountain View High School
I think a lot of homework is bad for students because they just go through a whole day of learning and the last thing they want is more work. I think after school, students should focus on sports and other activities. Most nights, I don't have much homework, which is good because I get to do the things I want. I think homework can be a useful tool for student in classes, such as math, where students are grasping new concepts daily and homework helps to instill what they've learned in their minds.
Evan Roberts, 16
Mountain View High School
I personally think we have too much homework, not because I'm lazy though. Last year, I would have said I had too much, but that was because I was lazy. Now, that I have a job and am getting older and more responsible, it's gotten harder to manage my time. I personally think, as we get into our junior year, we should get less overnight homework and more projects. Then, we don't have to do homework every night, but still, we have homework regardless.
Marc Kragnes, 16
Mountain View High School
For me, the homework is just enough. I don't feel like it's too much. But, every once in a while, it does get a little crazy. I personally live to work under pressure, so it drives me to work harder. Homework is useful in different classes. In math, I feel it's very important to have and do homework. It helps me to learn and work on the material I have learned.
Melissa Poole, 15
Mountain View High School
I think students have too much homework. I think it is ridiculous to have homework every single night. I don't think it's fair because students have other things to do during the week. We have jobs, sports, and other activities too. What's the point of having a school day if we have to go home and do more school work? I think it's all right to maybe have homework over the weekend, but not during the week.
Kylie Drake, 16
Mountain View High School
Teachers definitely give too much homework. If teachers were to give no homework to students, our brains would have time to recover for the next day. I feel that if the teachers cannot finish teaching us what we need to learn, that they should not force us to do it at home. We came to school five days a week for six hours a day. If we are doing homework too, that makes it feel like we are at school all the time. I think we should just abolish homework entirely.
Sean Campbell, 16
Mountain View High School
For the most part, I think homework is a great idea, but sometimes, it's just too much. It's good because you're practicing what you learned. I don't like that, if you go home and practice it wrong, you're just learning it incorrectly because your teacher is not there to help you. I think if teacher give out homework, it should be simple. The less homework I get, the more focused I am.
Ashlee King, 15
Mountain View High School
I think homework is extremely helpful. With the amount in question, I truly believe it all depends on how you use your time. If you use your time unwisely, you might think homework is too much. In school, homework is a lot of points, so even if it's too much, it is important to do all you can. Another plus is it allows you to make your own mistakes and learn from them. All in all, that is what homework is all about learning. Just always remember to keep a balance and everything will be fine.
Alexis Cox, 15
Mountain View High School
Homework is very crucial to learning. Most students whine about little assignments. I won't lie, I often catch myself doing it too. Sure, it is long, boring and not really liked. Nevertheless, math, science, history and basic knowledge can't just be talked about. These must be practiced in order to actually be skilled in them. Some schools don't even give homework any more! The school board wonders why a lot of the kids who enter school don't succeed in real life. Homework helps to keep students on track.
Joey Santos, 15
Mountain View High School
Students have too much homework. Although students have the choice of being in regular, honors, or Advanced Placement classes, they should not be assigned so much homework. School is great and education is an amazing thing that everyone needs, but there is a line that should not be crossed, a homework line. Students go to school to get educated and should be fully in the zone of work at school. If students do not finish an assignment that was given to them in class then it should be homework. An additional amount is not needed and should not be given. Students and teachers have enough to worry about besides homework.
Jessica Baca-Gutierrez, 16
Sunnyside High School
I believe students don't have a lot of homework, at least at my school. Matter of fact, they need more homework because the AIMS is coming up and we should have some practice before the AIMS comes. That's why I believe we need more homework.
Chantae Almeda, 12
Naylor Middle School
I think that we have too much homework because we have better things to do than work. The teacher should not give that much homework because we can miss our favorite cartoons, can't go to the store or play video games. Also, the homework can take too long.
Rafael Franco, 11
Naylor Middle School
I think the kids have too little homework because we only get 1 to 2 pages a week. I think we should at least get 3 or 4 pages because kids need education. I think homework is useful because some kids in class don't pay attention, so to make sure they understand give them homework.
DeAnna Milano, 11
Naylor Middle School
Most kids will say there is too much homework. I say in elementary school there is too much. In middle school I say there is just enough homework. I think that because I only get a few days of homework a week.
Michael Grijalva, 13
Naylor Middle School
I think we have just enough homework because we do work at school and I think school work is enough. So I think we should get two pages of homework, also some people have things to do at home. That's why I think we have enough homework.
Lujana Dribo, 12
Naylor Middle School
I think we have too little homework. We have AIMS in 15 days. We need to study for the big test.
Anthony Bundza, 13
Naylor Middle School
I believe students have just enough homework because we do a lot of work in school, and we get enough homework. We should get a rest at home.
Fatuma Shiwoko, 13
Naylor Middle School
I think they give us too much because I have better things to do like hanging around with my friends.
Selena Nunez, 11
Naylor Middle School
I think it's just enough and useful because the homework they always give out is just a review. That way the teachers will know if we understand. It's just enough because we already learned some chapters, so they should give us homework when we already understand.
Jessica Windover, 12
Naylor Middle School
I think students have just enough homework because in middle school we have seven classes. We have homework in most all of the classes so I think we have just enough homework.
Briseida Quintana Cota, 12
Naylor Middle School
School is important and filled with many tasks to finish and complete. Within the tasks comes homework. I know homework is important but too much homework is sometimes not healthy. Students that actually do homework usually stay up long hours in the night to get their homework done. The reason why we get a lot of homework is because we have six classes with about an hour worth of homework given out. I believe homework should be minimized because we as student need our rest to do well in school. Without rest, students usually drift off into to their own world and fall asleep. If teachers work together and give less homework all together, I believe more students will pay attention in class. This would mean a higher percent of students would end up passing the class. Another solution would be to give the homework as class work instead of homework.
Katrina Arroyos, 14
Sunnyside High School
Do students have too much homework? Too much is never enough. We need the homework to help us study in our exams, including the AIMS. Teachers give us this much homework to help us understand and some how teach at home. We may not like it, but if it helps us to become successful, then might as well do it!
Julio Martinez, 16
Sunnyside High School
Many teachers have limits on how much homework they give their students. Each day the homework packs on in each class. Teachers may not give a lot of homework in one class but from all classes together it is a lot. For a days worth I feel it is too much homework. I do feel it is useful though because it helps as a study guide. Also it is like practicing what you learned at school that day. I do understand that it helps those who need extra help but they shouldn't give that much. Although in a way I feel like it is a great big help. I also understand that we are in a higher grade than others but we also need a break. I feel that teachers should give us students a break on the amount of homework they give us.
Maricela Celis, 14
Sunnyside High School
Students get too much homework because it takes hours for them to do it, and I do not think homework helps students to learn the subject. For some people homework is useless and they are not taught anything by it. For those types of students they would rather have the teacher explain what is being taught instead of just given homework.
Manny Flores, 14
Sunnyside High School
I think that students have just enough homework. I think that it's useful because it helps you study for tests that we might have in the future.
Kourtney Brogan, 12
Pomerene School
I don't think homework is useful at all. If you think about it, if you have a naughty class, half the people ever do it. The things you learn that day are the same things as homework. You also usually have a review at the end of the week. AIMS is also like a review. Do your end of the week reviews and "Ta-dah!" you'll pass. So I personally think homework is NOT useful.
Allison Rogers, 12
Pomerene School
I have always hated homework because I don't think there is a reason why we should have to take extra work home with us and do it in the little free time we get at the end of the day. Now, if I don't finish all the work I have to do in the seven-hour school day, I take it home with me and finish it. That is my choice. But what is the point in teachers giving their students more work to do at the end of the day? They say it is for the students to practice their skills while at home. Come on! If a student does not do the material during class time, there is no way that they are going to want to do it at home. Frankly, I think homework is useless, and a waste of paper. I say save more trees, give less homework.
Danielle Encinas, 18
Desert View High School
I believe that homework is necessary to keep information fresh in my mind, but if I have too much it's hard to remember anything. It is important to me that teachers take into consideration that I have a life outside of school and have better things to do with my time than hours of homework every night. Fortunately this is my last semester of my senior year. I will never again be forced to stare at a computer screen or bury my face into another history book. Oops, I take that back…I'm going to college.
Brenna Sardina, 18
Desert View High School
I'm just coasting through this year. I feel that I worked hard enough the previous three years so its only fair that I get a break my last year. I think homework is to benefit us. Teachers don't assign us homework just because they're trying to torture us even though it may seem like it. It's to help instill in us what they're teaching us. How are we supposed to pick up something without conditioning in it?
Valentin Mesa, 18
Desert View High School
I think the amount of homework I get is perfect — it helps me work on things I need help with. Although I understand pretty much everything the teachers have been teaching me, homework challenges me to do it on my own at home and ask for help when I need it. It's easy for me to get help when I need it because I can either ask my older cousins or my aunt. They know a lot of things I don't, but sometimes my cousins ask me for help, especially in math. I usually understand the homework but I hate it when I have to read for English.
Kirsten Crockwell, 14
Desert View High School
One problem with homework is that you might not understand what you're doing and even if you ask your parents for help they probably won't know because they might have poor education. This is a problem in my family: my parents didn't get too far in school either so sometimes I help them instead.
Aaron Valverde, 17
Desert View High School
Homework has never helped me. If I don't understand the work in the classroom, I am not going to understand it outside of school where not even the sanctuary of my own room is peaceful with my sister and dad screaming at each other. It makes it hard to understand logarithmic, polynomial, and trigonometrical equations.
Rebecca Pauley, 18
Desert View High School
For some students, homework can be too much, especially when you're in after-school activities or have a job. I know that from experience. I have been a cheerleader here at Desert View High School since my freshman year and sometimes it was overwhelming. I would get out of school, go to practice, and by the time I got home I had barely enough time to eat dinner and do what I had to do around the house, and still do my homework. I would stay up all hours of the night trying to finish. Sometimes it seems as if teachers forget that we have six classes and there are days when we get homework from every class. This year I was very fortunate to get the teachers I do have because I rarely get any homework in their classes.
Elizabeth Ruiz, 17
Desert View High School
Homework in high school is very different from any other grade level. The reason for this is that the amount of homework we depends on the class that the student has. There are teachers that want to stuff our brains, so they give homework every day but there are also the teachers who understand we have lives outside of school. Overall, homework is important but only to a certain extent. We do need it, but not everyday, because then we get drained. Homework from six classes everyday is hectic and stressful. I think homework should be limited to every other day.
Cecilia Romero, 19
Desert View High School
Students whine that teachers give a lot of homework to do, and in some cases it's true. Some teachers don't realize that students have more than one class and assign them a months worth of homework to be due in a week. Teachers have to be considerate of students; we have a life out of school. Some of us have jobs, or are involved in after school activities. Although some homework is helpful and necessary, too much of it can just make the situation worse. Too much homework can get to the point that students lose sleep due to the fact that they stay up till midnight to finish.
Jessica Hernandez, 16
Desert View High School
I think students have just enough homework. Lots of students have important things to do after school, so they don't have time for homework. I do think that homework is useful. Usually students don't pay attention in class. Homework allows both teachers and students to assess what level of ability the student is currently at, as well as what skills they need to work on.
Leslie Valverde, 16
Sunnyside High School
I think that schools do overdo it on homework. Sometimes they give schools so much homework that students stay up to two in the morning. Homework is very beneficial when it comes to seeing if the student knows the material but when given too much it is only hurting the student.
Talia Bennett, 15
Sunnyside High School
I think students have too much homework. They already work a lot during class, so why do students need more work? It's not like some students even do it. We already work hard during school and at home and we don't need homework. Maybe not so much.
Sabrina Gurrola, 15
Sunnyside High School
I think students do have too much homework, especially those in Honors and AP courses. Those do require more work, but teachers don't factor work or projects from other classes and personal problems that might be affecting a students work or not. Teachers should give out less homework, give work that can be finished in class, or spend more time on the topic for the day to make sure that students get the material.
Alda Dominguez, 16
Sunnyside High School
I think teachers give kids too little homework because when we get into high school and college kids will get like five times more homework. I also think that homework is useful because when we are old enough to have a job, managers will look at your education and sometimes people will try to cheat you out of money or something.
Sean Brogan, 11
Pomerene School
I think there should be homework to a certain point. I think if homework would be assigned the same day every week, our mind-set would be more focused as it would become a routine and we'd be more prepared. I believe if students get too much homework, they get stressed, especialy if they are having difficulties in that certain subject. I don't think we should have homework over the weekend. Just alike adults need a break from their everyday job, students should be able to take a break from school.
Aaron Kramm, 14
Pomerene School
I think kids have a little too much homework. It's not that it is hard but kids just don't have the time to do it. Most kids are doing sports so that gives them less time. Kids do multiple sports, so they go from one to the other. A lot of times teachers will have them do a big assignment. That makes it even harder. It would be nice to have a break from homework.
Dillon Dastrup, 14
Pomerene School
Yes, students have too much homework. I don't like to spend time at home studying a formula or writing essays. I tend to pay more attention in class and prefer to absorb all needed materials during class. The only thing I don't mind doing is studying for chapter tests or finals. When you get home, there are too many distractions such as the phone, the computer, or video games. Although, homework is a good way to practice techniques and reinforce information taught at school, it tends to take more time than there is available. If you are involved in athletics or other extracurricular activities, it becomes impossible to do everything well. I know some students can only handle so much before they crash and resort to other sources of getting the required work done, such as copying or asking others to do it for them. Of course, I'm not that student!
