Here's a quick look at the pedigree of John Sidney McCain III, a Republican who has served as a U.S. senator from Arizona since 1986.
• Born Aug. 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone. He would be the oldest person ever elected U.S. president for an initial term. While age didn't come up Thursday, he's been quoted several times with a favorite quip: "I am as old as dirt, with more scars than Frankenstein."
• McCain's wispy white hair and bright piercing brown eyes do not belie his age. His stiff movements are reminders of his years of abuse at the hands of Vietnamese tormentors. While he is unable to lift his arms above his shoulders — he can't comb his hair — because of untreated injuries while a prisoner of war, he is an avid hiker who trekked the Grand Canyon from the North Rim to the South Rim last August. Thin, faint red lines on the left side of his face mark the removal of melanomas; McCain is examined every three months for possible recurrence.
• The son and grandson of four-star Navy admirals, McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958 near the bottom of his class academically and high on list of those challenging rules and earning demerits, both of which are often the subject of McCain's self-deprecating humor.
His war background
• On Oct. 26, 1967, McCain's plane was shot down during a raid over Hanoi. McCain ejected and, with two broken arms and a busted knee, he was beaten by the Vietnamese and tortured as a prisoner of war for more than five years. Wednesday was the 34th anniversary of McCain's release from his Vietnamese captors.
• McCain, who retired from the Navy in 1981, received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He seldom mentions other aspects of his military career other than to say it included leadership positions and that he was a POW for more than five years.
• McCain ran for Arizona's First Congressional District in 1982 when John Rhodes announced his retirement. McCain was elected to the Senate in 1986 when Barry Goldwater retired.
• McCain married Cindy Hensley, daughter of a Phoenix-area Anheuser-Busch wholesaler in 1981. It's his second marriage, and he has a total of seven children. His wife is the chairman of Hensley and Co.
• McCain has written several books, including "Character Is Destiny: Inspiring Stories Every Young Person Should Know and Every Adult Should Remember," "Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life" and "Faith of My Fathers," all with Mark Salter.
