TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Honduras said Tuesday it will welcome a new U.S. ambassador after a one-week delay meant to show support for Bolivia in its diplomatic spat with Washington.

Deputy Foreign Minister Eduardo Rosales said the Central American nation plans to formally receive career diplomat Hugo Llorens' credentials on Friday.

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya delayed the ambassador's official reception last week to show "solidarity with Bolivia, because the U.S. meddles in that country's affairs."

His decision came two days after Bolivian President Evo Morales expelled the U.S. envoy to La Paz, claiming he had incited violent anti-government protests. Washington denies the allegations.

New Ambassador Hugo Llorens told reporters after meeting with Rosales on Tuesday that "relations between the U.S. and Honduras are excellent." He said he looks forward to a face-to-face with Zelaya.

Llorens said there are plans for a meeting between Zelaya and President Bush next week when the Honduran president will be in New York City for a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly.
