British rocker jailed for child abuse freed
HO CHI MINH CITY — Authorities freed British glam rocker Gary Glitter from prison in southern Vietnam on Tuesday, sending the convicted child molester into an uncertain future after nearly three years of confinement.
Glitter, 64, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was convicted in March 2006 of committing "obscene acts with children." He served 2 years and 9 months of a three-year sentence, which was reduced for good behavior.
The incidents involved two girls, ages 10 and 11, from the southern coastal city of Vung Tau.
MEXICO
Priest assailed over miniskirt comment
MEXICO CITY — A Catholic priest's condemnation of miniskirts on an official church Web site is causing outrage among some Mexican women, who say the Roman Catholic Church is making it easier to justify sexual violence against women.
The Rev. Sergio G. Roman sounded the alarm against miniskirts in an online publication to prepare Catholics for a church family-values forum next year in Mexico City. "When we show our body without prudence, without modesty, we are prostituting ourselves," wrote Roman, a Mexico City priest.
Mexican newspaper columnists lampooned the article, and women's-rights advocates have assailed it.
The archdiocese says the news media have twisted Roman's words and that the article was meant only to provide "moral guidance for the Catholic community."
25 kidnap victims rescued by soldiers
VERACRUZ — Mexican officials say soldiers have rescued 25 Central Americans kidnapped in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.
State police spokesman Sergio Lopez says the army raided a house in the town of Tierra Blanca and arrested one man Monday. He says authorities are looking for five other suspects.
Migrant Miguel Palacios says he and others were kidnapped after arriving at Tierra Blanca's train station Friday. He says the men beat him in the face and body, and hit him with wooden boards. The assailants demanded each migrant pay $500.
The Guatemalans, Hondurans and Salvadorans were heading to the United States.
EGYPT
Fire destroys palace
CAIRO — Fire ravaged a 19th century palace used by the upper house of Egypt's parliament Tuesday, with flames bursting through windows as helicopters scooped water from the Nile River to douse the blaze.
Flames soared upward from the top floor of the three-story building, and much of the interior appeared gutted. While firefighters focused on one corner of the building, the blaze burned unabated on the other side, spreading to the second floor with periodic explosions and showers of sparks.
There was no official word on the cause. Evacuated employees said authorities told them they had ruled out terrorism, and that an electrical short-circuit had likely sparked the fire.
ARGENTINA
Priest on trial in 17 counts of sex abuse
BUENOS AIRES — An Argentine priest went on trial Tuesday, charged with 17 counts of sexual abuse and corruption of three young boys.
Prosecutors say Julio Grassi, 52, abused three boys — including two minors — who attended his well-known "Happy the Children" Foundation for underprivileged youth. The boys are on a list of more than 350 witnesses who will testify against Grassi over the next few months. The archbishop of Buenos Aires is also on the list.
Grassi reiterated a claim of innocence Tuesday during a recess.
