Question: What kind of cancer did John McCain have?
Answer: Republican Presidential candidate John McCain had malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.
The first melanoma was removed in 1993. Surgery in 2000 removed two more melanomas on his upper arm and temple, leaving his left cheek scarred and puffy.
Because the melanomas were caught early, radiation and chemotherapy were unnecessary.
He remains melanoma-free although he has had moles removed elsewhere on his body, which often were basal cell carcinoma, the least aggressive and most common type of skin cancer.
As he campaigns, McCain wears baseball caps at outdoor events or finds shade. He also uses a strong sunblock.
McCain blames the melanomas on time in the sun as a kid, but it could also be from the 5 1/2 years he spent as a POW in Vietnam where prisoners were kept in the sun for long periods.
