AZ global-warming 'Focus' includes UA events today

GLENDALE — Amanda Clement and Whitney Masters giggled as they used straws to blow bubbles in beakers containing a pink solution. A min-ute later, the water was clear.
There's some complex chemistry at work, but the lesson from the Glendale Community College students was simple: Carbon dioxide in the breath creates carbonic acid in the solution, the same way carbon dioxide emissions from cars acidify seawater, harming coral reefs and other marine life.
Students here and around Arizona are seeing green this week as colleges and universities participate in a nationwide teach-in about climate change. More than 1,000 schools overall were said to be participating in Focus the Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America.
The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, five other community colleges and a high school also were participating in Focus the Nation.
UA's events include the "teach-in" today, starting at 10 a.m., as part of National Teach-in Day. The majority of the UA events will be at the Student Union.
As they looked at a hydrogen-powered car and displays about endangered wildlife, public transportation and other topics Wednesday, students and administrators at Glendale Community College said college-age people are the key to reducing the effects of global warming.
Glendale Community College's Green Efforts committee put on the school's Focus the Nation event, which started on Jan. 22 and will continue until Friday.
