Tucson, Arizona | Published: 12.23.2008
Age: 17
Parents' names: Armando and Andrea Murrieta
Favorite classes: Psychology and sociology. Izamar is fascinated by what causes people to act the way they do.
Activities in school: Izamar is busy with volleyball, journalism, yearbook, National Honor Society and Student Council at Luz, a charter school near Grant and Silverbell roads. She's also a student leader — she's secretary of the Honor Society and treasurer of the Student Council.
Activities outside of school: Izamar helped serve food during the annual Nam Jam, a fundraising reunion of Vietnam War veterans, and Thanksgiving at the Barrio.
Whom would you have lunch with if you could have lunch with anyone? Frankie J, an R&B singer, because she loves the way he sings.
What books are you reading now? For school, Izamar is reading "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. But her favorite book is the romance novel "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks.
Whom do you admire most? Her parents. "They have always wanted something better for me. I trust them."
What's your favorite song? "Another Day" by Paul McCartney.
Plans after high school: Izamar plans to attend the University of Arizona. Eventually, she wants to study medicine.
Dream job: Pediatrician.
Dream car: A black Mustang.
Favorite place in Tucson: St. Augustine Cathedral, "because when I go, I feel safe and in peace."
Hidden talents: "I believe I can get along with anybody and everybody, and I hope that is the same with people around me," she said.
Vouch: Her English teacher at Luz Academy, Ralph Chavez, wrote in his nomination that Izamar is gifted and destined to succeed. "But most importantly, she does not exude the normal smart-aleck attitude you see so much of," he wrote. "She is most humble, respectful and pleasant as a teenager."

● Student of the Week runs every Tuesday through May. In addition to being featured in the story, each student receives a plaque donated by Tuller Trophy and a certificate from the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent. If you'd like to nominate a deserving student, go to www.azstarnet.com/sn/ studentoftheweek/ and fill out the nomination form. Students also must fill out a form. Both forms need to be completed for us to consider students. Find links to past winners at the same site.
