Isabel Garcia has been awarded the Lannan Foundation's Prize for Cultural Freedom for her work defending immigrants' rights.
Garcia is the Pima County legal defender, a position similar to public defender, and co-founded Derechos Humanos, a community-based group that defends immigrant rights and works to publicize conditions on the border with Mexico.
Garcia was one of five people recognized by the 2008 Cultural Freedom Awards.
The Lannan Foundation, based in Santa Fe, is a family foundation dedicated to cultural freedom, diversity and creativity that supports writers, artists and activists.
The Prize for Cultural Freedom recognizes people whose work celebrates the human right to freedom of imagination, inquiry and expression. The foundation defines cultural freedom as "the right of individuals and communities to define and protect valued and diverse ways of life currently threatened by globalization."
According to a Derechos Humanos, the prize comes with a $150,000 cash award.
