It was opening day at Rillito Downs on Nov. 4, 1978, and the crowd that showed up was one of the largest in recent years. More than 3,200 people saw several close races, including the $2,200 Quarter Horse Inaugural Handicap. Blackjack Orosco won the Inaugural Handicap by a nose in 18.08 seconds. The racing fans were taking advantage of free clubhouse seating on opening day of Rillito's 49-day 1978-79 season.
