Two Pima County jail corrections officers were arrested Thursday on computer tampering charges, an official said.
According to the Arizona Attorney General's Office, the pair are accused of accessing a Pima County sheriff's database for purposes outside their official responsibilities, although they would not say exactly what the men were looking for.
Sameer Ibrahim Qasem, 38, and Keith Anthony Doty, 22, will be booked into the jail, said Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.
Qasem is facing 26 counts of computer tampering, while Doty is facing eight counts on the same charge.
They have been placed on leave pending termination, Hanke said.
Two of the people that Doty accessed information on included a man who took a number of bank employees hostage last month before fatally shooting himself in the head and a man who was shot to death by a friend who was playing with a gun, according to court documents.
The Sheriff's Department is not commenting on what the men are accused of doing, as the primary investigation was conducted by the FBI, Hanke said.
The FBI also would not release any details regarding their activity other than to say that the arrests are the result of an internal investigation by the Sheriff's Department, according to Special Agent Manuel Johnson, an FBI spokesman.
The men were said to have accessed the database between March 2007 and May 2008, according to the Attorney General's Office.
Qasem was hired January 2003; Doty was hired in July 2006.
The arrests were made as the FBI served search warrants at Qasem's residence and work locker.
Johnson would not discuss what was seized.
Qasem's brother — 36-year-old Jameel Qasem — was also arrested during the investigation, the Attorney General's Office said.
He is accused of procuring and possessing two fake driver's licenses and two fake Social Security cards. The Attorney General's Office would not say if he obtained these documents by creating them himself or from someone else.
