A high school cheerleader and a coach were hospitalized in critical condition Saturday after a van from San Manuel High School rolled over on the way to a Friday night football game.
Eight cheerleaders and three coaches were in the school van when it crashed at 5 p.m. about 10 miles west of Benson.
Three other cheerleaders were hospitalized at University Medical Center in fair condition. Four students and two coaches were released after treatment at area hospitals, school Principal John Ryan said Saturday. All the cheerleaders and coaches were female.
The accident injured everyone in the Dodge van, which rolled on Interstate 10 after the driver swerved to miss a dog on the highway, the Department of Public Safety said.
Two people in a car that had been following the van were killed when they were hit by a big-rig truck as they slowed to avoid the wreck. The dead were identified as Richard Spettigue, 56, of Casa Grande, and Brandon Spettigue, 22, of Surprise. Driver Sally Spettigue, 41, of Surprise, was hospitalized in fair condition at UMC.
The big-rig driver, Richard Liller, 45, of Hot Springs, Colo., was treated and released, and a passenger was hospitalized, DPS Lt. James Warriner said.
The three coaches and an eight-member cheerleading squad from San Manuel were on their way to Tombstone for a game. The game was canceled.
UMC said school van driver and coach Elizabeth Zazueta, 47, was in critical condition. Cheerleader Tyler Cline, 16, also was in critical condition.
The DPS identified these other injured people who were in the van: Mitchell Zazueta, 16; Halen Sanchez, 26; Armina Sharp, 17; and Sharron Sierra, 17.
