The Arizona Daily Star and StarNet won first place Saturday night for immigration coverage at the Online News Association awards banquet in Washington, D.C.
The association's ninth annual awards honor excellence in digital journalism.
The Star's immigration entry highlighted three projects in particular: "Deadliest migrant trail in U.S." is right on Tucson's doorstep; "Behind the Immigration Rhetoric"; and "Death in the Desert: Jesus' long journey home."

The award came in the category of topical reporting, small sites, which is an award for beat reporting or sustained coverage of a single topic.
Another Star and StarNet project, this one on "social promotion" of students in Tucson-area school districts, also was an Online News Association finalist, in the category of investigative reporting, small sites.
