Hangar construction at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is causing morning traffic jams outside D-M's Swan Road gate, a situation expected to continue for about two weeks.
Motorists are advised to avoid, if possible, the intersection of South Swan and East Golf Links roads, where traffic is backing up on Golf Links due to an influx of construction vehicles waiting to turn right to enter the base, said Capt. Ed Ekpoudom, a D-M spokesman.
Commercial vehicles are required to use the Swan Road entrance for security inspections. The problem is that the right-turn lane on eastbound Golf Links isn't long enough to accommodate the higher number of trucks waiting to turn.
On Tuesday, that caused a morning backup about a quarter-mile long, Ekpoudom said.
He said D-M is taking other measures to ease congestion, such as staggering arrival times for airmen reporting to work.
