For the second consecutive year, Tucson has been named one of the top 10 cities for per capita rates of vehicle thefts, according to a report released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
With more than 7,700 vehicle thefts reported in 2007, Tucson landed the No. 10 spot on the list — the same spot it had in 2006 when more than 8,500 vehicle thefts were reported.
Tucson's theft rate per 100,000 residents did not make the top 10 in 2005 as the 7,569 reported incidents put the area at No. 15.
The Phoenix area topped Tucson, grabbing the No. 8 spot in 2007 with more than 34,000 reported vehicle thefts, according to the NICB. The year before it ranked No. 4.
At the top of the list is Modesto, Calif., which has the highest per capita rate for vehicle thefts in the country, a news release from the NICB said.
