Two teenage girls were injured — one critically — Monday when a stranger attacked them with a machete as they waited for a bus in Midtown, police said Thursday.
No arrests have been made, and police have not determined a motive for the attack, which occurred shortly after 10 p.m. in the area of East Grant Road and North Campbell Avenue, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
He gave the following account:
The three girls boarded a bus Downtown at the Ronstadt Transit Center and got off at Grant and North Norris Avenue.
They were sitting on a bench when a man with a black-and-white bandanna on his face came up from behind.
"It appeared that he focused his anger on one particular girl — the 17-year-old — for no apparent reason," Pacheco said. "She suffered several machete strikes to her face and head, as well as her forearms, because she was trying to protect herself."
One of the girl's friends tried to intervene and was also struck but wasn't seriously injured, Pacheco said. The other friend was not injured.
The man left in a white four-door Dodge Intrepid.
The 17-year-old remained hospitalized Thursday, and investigators plan on re-interviewing the other girl who was not seriously injured.
The girls did not know the man, Pacheco said. Authorities reviewed video from the bus they rode to Grant and Norris, and they noted that a man began speaking with the 17-year-old.
There was no argument, and the man is not believed to be a suspect, but police would like to speak with him.
No information was released on what that man looked like.
The video of the girls on the bus before the attack Monday night was not available Thursday night.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line of the Pima County Attorney's Office.
The attack took place off Sun Tran property, company spokeswoman Michele Joseph said.
"In light of that, we of course value our employees' and customers' safety, but we have not implemented any additional security measures," Joseph said.
The company has cameras installed in all of its buses and transit centers, and it encourages riders to report any suspicious activity, Joseph said. Each bus has four cameras mounted inside and one on the front.
