A Tucson police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked him Monday night as he was checking on a call in a Midtown neighborhood, police said Tuesday.
The shooting occurred after Officer Ryan Danaher went to a home in the 600 block of North Texas Circle, near North Columbus Boulevard and East Fifth Street, for a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the neighborhood, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
The caller was apparently concerned because of prior burglaries in the area, Pacheco said.
Danaher arrived shortly after 7 p.m. and proceeded to check the backyard of the home that the car was parked in front of, Pacheco said. As he did so, the 110-pound dog attacked Danaher, biting him in the hand.
Danaher — who has been with the department for a year — shot the dog twice, Pacheco said. It was an American bulldog, according to Kim Janes, manager of the Pima Animal Care Center.
The Animal Care Center was called to pick the dog up. It will be tested for rabies, Janes said.Animal Care had not had any prior contacts with the dog or its owner, Janes said.
The shooting is under investigation by the department’s internal affairs office, which is standard procedure.
