PRESCOTT — Residents of a remote mountain community north of Phoenix were evacuated Sunday as a 400-acre wildfire was burning a half-mile away, officials said.
It was unclear how many people were evacuated altogether, but Prescott National Forest spokeswoman Noel Fletcher said about 95 percent of the residents in Crown King agreed to leave while the rest stayed behind.
Residents of the Horsethief Basin recreation area and campers in two nearby campsites also were evacuated. The area is about 50 miles north of Phoenix.
American Red Cross spokeswoman Tracey Kiest said about 40 evacuees had checked into a shelter at Mayer High School, but only one family would be staying overnight.
Fletcher said five heavy air tankers were fighting the part of the fire near the communities.
Fire behavior will depend largely on a storm expected to bring heavy winds and possible moisture, she said.
"Obviously, we're anxious," Fletcher said. "But we're doing everything we can to keep the fire where it is."
Sheriff's officials say the blaze began Saturday night after a lost hiker set a signal fire for search-and-rescue crews.
The fire is slowly moving north. So far, fire crews have been using aircraft to battle the blaze. More crews and engines are on the way.
Just southwest of Phoenix, fire fighters are holding a blaze in check along the Gila River bed.
Deputy Chief Dave Martin with the Gila River Fire Department says the fire grew to 5,400 acres as of Saturday night. The fire was 65 percent contained by Sunday.
