A task force caught more than 100 fugitives in the Tucson area during a six-day sweep that ended Friday.
Along with the 106 arrests, authorities seized 40 pounds of marijuana, three stolen vehicles and small amounts of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin.
Authorities were targeting sex offenders, gang members and violent criminal suspects, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Tom Twohey, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshal's Service.
Dubbed Operation FALCON — Federal and Local Cops Organized Nationally — the sweep involved 14 federal, state and local agencies.
"The goal is to help local law enforcement with investigations by providing resources of the federal government," Twohey said. "It helps make the community a safer place. These people have warrants, and they need to be resolved."
Among the captured fugitives was Jose Libni De La Vera Lopez, a Mexican national who crossed into the United States illegally to evade capture in connection with a February 2005 homicide in Hermosillo, Sonora. De La Vera Lopez was arrested Thursday at a duplex on East 24th Street, where he was staying with family members.
Another fugitive, Michael L. Neeley, was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender. He was arrested in a mobile home where he was living with a female companion and a young child.
Monday afternoon, authorities went to an apartment complex on North Campbell Avenue near East Prince Road in search of Carlos Castro, 25, who was wanted on suspicion of sale of cocaine. His girlfriend lives at the complex, but Castro was not there at the time.
At the same time, a deputy U.S. marshal had been sent to Castro's mother's home to see if he might be there. When he was seen walking into the mobile home near North Romero and West Fort Lowell roads, the deputy called for backup.
Officers surrounded the home and were able to take Castro into custody without incident. He remained in jail Friday afternoon and was being held without bail.
Other attempts to find offenders were sometimes not as successful as authorities went to a home only to learn that the person hadn't lived there in some time, or to work sites where the fugitive was no longer employed.
