Today is Flag Day, one of the lesser-known national holidays, but one that is rich in history.
Though not an official federal holiday, the day commemorates the adoption of the United States' flag in 1777.
According to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the national civic group began declaring June 14 as Flag Day in 1907. And in 1908, the group mandated that every local Elks lodge observe Flag Day with a ceremony.
President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day in 1916, but it wasn't until 1949 that the date was permanently designated as Flag Day by an act of Congress.
Many groups observe Flag Day with ceremonies that include presentation of the flag.
