Camp drive is in need of more donors to reach goal

We're proud to publicly thank the individuals, families and businesses that donated to the Arizona Daily Star's Sportmen's Fund Send a Kid to Camp program.
To date, 1,185 donations totaling $176,851 have been received toward our goal of raising $200,000 by June 1 to put at least 720 children in an environment this summer that models positive values, inspiring them to do more and be more.
Send a Kid to Camp raises money so children from low-income households can go to YMCA, Boy Scout and Girl Scout camps, and to Camp Courage burn camp. Last year, this mission was expanded to send children whose parents or guardians are in the military to the local camps for free.
Any additional funds raised will go to help pay for 236 girls from at-risk neighborhoods or in foster families who are on a waiting list to attend Girl Scout camp.
In 2007, the program spent $197,708 to pay for camp for 714 kids. Of those, 229 children were from military families.
Since 1947, the Sportsmen's Fund, with the support of Star readers, has raised money to help pay for more than 32,000 children to go to camp.
The Sportsmen's Fund is one of the oldest 501(c)(3) charities in Southern Arizona. At least 97 cents of every dollar spent goes to send children to camp.
Your contribution is tax- deductible and qualifies with the state of Arizona for the working-poor charitable tax credit of up to $400.

Why I give
"My dad, Herb Annis, whose business was Annis Gowns in New York City, loved telling stories of his summers as a counselor at Surprise Lake, a 'scholarship camp' in upstate New York. Every kid should go to camp."
