A man who was firing indiscriminately at people at a convenience store was shot to death by a Tucson police officer on Monday afternoon.
The officer-involved shooting is the second in two days.
No bystanders were injured.
The incident occurred at about 12:45 at North 11th Avenue and West Sahuaro Street, near Oracle and Grant roads, when a person called 911 to report that a man was riding a dune buggy in an open dirt lot and was firing in the direction of a Circle K store where "numerous people were in the line of fire," said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
"We don't know what he was doing in the area or why he was firing, but it appeared he was firing for no apparent reason, and it was a very dangerous situation," Pacheco said.
The first officer on the scene came up Sahuaro Street, where he encountered the gunman, Pacheco said.
The man, who was in his 30s, was standing near the driver's side of the buggy and fired toward the officer, Pacheco said. The officer tried to back his patrol car out of the line of fire.
At the same time, another officer, Luis Campos, who is part of the SWAT team, came up from behind on 11th Avenue, Pacheco said.
"He saw the suspect firing at the officer and posing a threat to others in the area," Pacheco said.
Campos, an eight-year veteran, used a rifle to shoot the gunman.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The name of the deceased will not be released until his family has been notified, Pacheco said.
Bill Dean, an employee of Big Sky Motorcycles, works across the street from where the shooting occurred and was in the line of fire, he said.
Dean said the man pulled up and parked in the dirt lot around 10:15 a.m. and sat there for about two hours.
About 12:20 p.m., Dean said, he was standing outside and heard loud noises but thought the man was throwing firecrackers.
"It escalated quickly, and I realized he didn't have fireworks; he had a gun," Dean said. "I saw him swinging it around, pointing it at everyone and shooting out of his car."
When the gunman got out of the dune buggy, he appeared to be intoxicated because he was stumbling about, Dean said. He was "waving the gun around at police," he said.
At that point, Dean stepped away from the window from which he was watching because he feared for his life, he said.
Robert Valdez, 51, a carpenter, said he was eating lunch at the Jack in the Box just north of the dirt lot when he heard police sirens.
He said he went outside and saw an officer with a rifle walking south on 11th Avenue toward the gunman. He said the officer was behind a patrol car with its trunk open. The officer shot the man after the man moved his arm toward the officers, Valdez said.
Valdez said he did not see a firearm in the man's hands. He heard five booms and it appeared the man was hit twice by the officer's gunfire, Valdez said.
Campos, 34, has been placed temporarily on another assignment, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
This was the fifth officer-involved shooting in the city this year.
